Mary Wurm was the oldest sister of the pianists Mathilde and Adela Verne. As a child, Mary came to Stuttgart where she studied for eight years. After her return to London, she heard Nathalie Janotha there and was so impressed by the latter that she applied for studies with Clara Schumann. The latter did not accept any students from Stuttgart, as a matter of principle, but still made an exception, as Mary Wurm was able to present numerous recommendations. Although Mary was already a quite well-known pianist in Britain, it took her some time to convince Clara Schumann of her talent but still had to start from scratch with her. Nevertheless, in 1884, her teacher ensured she could perform in a concert together with Joseph Joachim and the cellist Alfredo Piatti in London. Wurm mainly gave concerts in Britain and Germany, where she lived until her death. She was praised for her exceptionally beautiful legato and in 1914 she published Praktische Vorschule zum Lehrwerk von Elisabeth Caland [Practical Preparation for the Manual of Elisabeth Caland] in Hanover which she was eager to promote.
