[Monday, 24th August – quite some hangover – hangoverish weather - via Dietikon to Zurich – the Hütiberg [= Uetliberg mountain] – view of the pious and nice small town – really busy – in the background, charming view of the Lake and the white Grisons Alps – stopping at Hotel Raben (1)

– walk through the town – mediocre faces – encounter with Count Hülsen, Kahle, Velsen and Bonnstett – splendid lunch – the languishing widow – the talkative witty individual from Dorpat [now Tartu] – talking about Naples – good conversation – mainly Germans at the table d’hôte – the Library (3) – the Alps in miniature – Lavater’s portrait – walk with the Heidelbergers to the monument to Gessner (4) – literary coffee house, execrable weather – beer house – good beer – Count Hülsen getting terribly drunk – the cute waitress – the drunk fixating coachman – shaking hands with the little sweetheart – proposals – cute chaste kisses – the old landlady with the club foot – and rejected agreements – Lower Neuchâtel – Hülsen’s stanzas – sound sleep]
