Joseph Fischhof

Joseph Fischhof (1804 – 1857)
Litograph by Andreas Staub, around 1840
Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien

Joseph Fischhof was professor of piano at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music and Clara Wieck's closest confidant during her stay in Vienna. Clara's correspondence with Robert Schumann, of which her father was not allowed to know anything, was partly transacted via Fischhof. He knew Schumann at that time quite well and was also the correspondent in Vienna of the "Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik". Fischhof also belonged to the circle of Robert Schumann, who tried to establish himself with his “Neue Zeitschrift für Musik” in 1838/1839. However, during his stay in Vienna, Schumann dissociated himself from Fischhof, although latter picked him up on Schumann’s arrival and introduced him to the most important people of the Viennese cultural life. In concluded in his diary: "I think we just do not fit with each other.", although he occasionally registered Fischhof’s help gratefully.
